Students Represent Australia at the Connecting Minds Project in Osaka /?p=38379 Mon, 27 Oct 2025 04:02:56 +0000 /?p=38379

Earlier this year, two groups of our students had the incredible opportunity to represent Australia as part of the Connecting Minds Project, a global education initiative linked to the Osaka Expo 2025.

The Connecting Minds Project brings together schools from around the world to collaborate on space-focused STEM challenges. The program encourages innovation, problem solving and global cooperation, with students designing solutions to real-world issues connected to space science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Our students partnered with peers fromRitsumeikan Keisho Junior and Senior High Schoolin Japan, working together virtually throughout the year to explore solutions to the challenge of“Isolation in Space.”Using online platforms and translation tools, the groups shared research, designs and ideas across time zones and languages.

Their collaboration culminated in a shared presentation at theOsaka Expo, where students showcased their work to an international audience.

The project was divided into two teams: Team Shooting for the Stars, made up of Quinn Rodway, Brody Lyons, Marcus Guy, and Toby Wells; and Team Astraeus, made up of Oscar Dawkins, Jeremy Landig, and Riley Dickinson.

Team Shooting for the Stars travelled to Japan to present in person. Their project explored the potential of converting lunar lava tubes into liveable habitats, providing protection from radiation and a sustainable base for human life on the Moon.

Team Astraeus remained in Australia and presented their work virtually to the Expo audience. Their research focused on the development of a helicopter capable of flying on Mars, using electric motor engines to map the Martian surface and assist in planetary exploration.

Both teams impressed judges and participants with their creativity, technical understanding and ability to collaborate internationally.

For the students who travelled to Osaka, the trip was more than just a scientific showcase, it was a cultural and personal experience. Between presentations, they explored local landmarks such as Osaka Castle, Toji Temple and the Osaka Aquarium, gaining an appreciation for Japan’s rich history and modern innovation.

The students described their participation in the Connecting Minds Project as “life changing”, with many saying it has inspired them to pursue further studies and careers in STEM fields. Others expressed new motivation to travel overseas in the future and continue learning about different cultures. “It was amazing working with students from another country”, said Jeremy. “We learned how to communicate and problem-solve in new ways, and it’s made me want to keep exploring engineering and space science.”

The Connecting Minds Project aims to build the skills and confidence of the next generation of innovators, encouraging diversity, creativity, and teamwork in the global STEM community. By working together across borders, our students not only expanded their technical knowledge but also represented WSSC and Australia, on an international stage with pride.

VCE Exams 2025 – Key Rules and Information /?p=38362 Sun, 26 Oct 2025 23:56:06 +0000 /?p=38362 The VCAA has strict regulations to ensure the fairness and integrity of the examination process. A breach of these rules can result in penalties, including a ‘Not Satisfactory’ (N) for a unit or being disqualified from the assessment.

1. Prohibited Items (The “Do Not Bring” List)

This is arguably the most critical rule, as possessing a prohibited device can lead to severe consequences, even if it’s turned off.

Mobile Phones – All mobile phones (even if turned off) are strictly prohibited.

Electronic Devices – Any device capable of storing, receiving, or transmitting information or electronic signals, including:

  • Smartwatches and computerised watches
  • Recorded music/video players, organisers, or dictionaries

  • Food and Drink – No food or drinks are permitted, except under special circumstances approved by the VCAA.

Water – Bottled water is permitted under approved conditions (e.g., a clear bottle with no label).

    2. Examination Room Conduct

You must follow all instructions given by the supervisor immediately and completely.

    • BRING YOUR I.D
    • Bring all required equipment – pens, pencils, stationary.
    • Communication: Do not communicate with any other student while the external assessment is being conducted.
    • Start and Stop: Do not begin to write or mark your paper or response material in any way, or use a calculator, until the supervisor advises writing may commence. You must cease writing immediately when instructed to stop.
    • Assistance: If you need to communicate with a supervisor (e.g., to ask a question or request more paper), you must raise your hand and wait for them to come to you.
    • Cheating: You must not cheat or assist other students to cheat, including any action that attempts to give you or another student an unfair advantage.
    • Paper Materials: Do not remove or tear out any part of a bound reference, answer book, or question/task book, except where specifically permitted (e.g., a removable formula sheet). You must not remove any response material (used or unused) from the room.

    3. Leaving the Examination

    • Students are not permitted to leave the examination room before the first 30 minutes of writing time have elapsed.
    • Students are not permitted to leave in the last five minutes of the VCE external assessment.

    Official 2025 VCE Exam Timetable

The official examination timetable is published by the VCAA.

As we begin Term 4, we would like to share some important information with parents and guardians of our Year 12 students.

The end of the Year 12 academic year is fast approaching, and we wish to farewell the students in a way that recognises their efforts appropriately. Below you will find key details regarding VCE exams, the final days of classes, and the upcoming Valedictory Presentation Ceremony.

Last Day of Year 12 classes – Tuesday 21st October

Tuesday the 21st of October will be the last day of required attendance at 鶹ѡ for the Year 12 class of 2025. All classes will run and students will be required to attend classes as normal. Year 12 students will assemble at the flag poles at 3.00pm to celebrate the last bell. Whilst the day is a dress up day, students will be required to change back into full, unaltered uniform for the final bell celebrations.

Farewell breakfast and assembly – Wednesday 22nd October

WSSC has arranged a celebration get together beginning at 9am. We will provide breakfast, music and activities. Students will have the opportunity to run an informal year 12 ceremony. This will occur at the flagpole area between the main building and the trade training centre. Year 12 students will have access to this area only.

This will conclude with a formal whole school assembly at the flag poles at 10.35am. After which all Staff and Year 10 and 11 students will form a “guard of honour” as the Year 12’s are farewelled out of the school by Mr Hilditch and Mr Whitehead. Parents are invited to join us for the whole school assembly and guard of honour.

    Behaviour during final days

While the conclusion of your child’s studies is a time for celebration before examinations commence, we would like to take this opportunity to remind families of the College’s expectations regarding behaviour and conduct during these final days. Students are expected to follow all standard school policies and guidelines, which can be accessed on the College website.

Any student who fails to meet these expectations, or who does not follow the instructions of staff, will be required to leave the school grounds immediately. Further consequences may also apply, including:

    1. Exclusion from the Year 12 Valedictory Ceremony
    2. Sitting exams at an alternative venue rather than at WSSC

    Valedictory – Wednesday 26th November

On Wednesday 26th of November at 6.00pm (for a 6.30pm start) the College will be holding its Year 12 Valedictory Ceremony at the Albury Entertainment Centre. This will be a celebration of the Class of 2025 and will acknowledge Year 12 students who have undertaken VCE /VCE VM. All current Year 12 students are invited. Ticketing arrangements will be communicated separately to this letter.

Final VCE Exams – Tuesday 28th October to Wednesday the 19th November

All students completing a scored VCE are required to sit their final VCE exams. Students who have elected to complete their VCE as a non-scored student must have completed the application paperwork and have this approved and signed by parents and House Leaders.

Students will be welcome at the College to access help from their teachers, to access required school resources and to study in the Study Centre during this time. It is advisable that they remain in contact with their teachers and check their college email on a daily basis so that they do not miss any important information or advice.

    Careers Support

Our Careers team will be available right up until the 19th of December for students to access post-schooling careers and tertiary advice and assistance. If at any stage you feel your child would benefit from a careers and pathways conversation, please direct them to our Careers team.

Staff will be available onsite at WSSC from 10am to 3pm on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th for students requiring advice or guidance after the ATAR release. Building Generational Success – Blake Byrne (SBAT) /?p=38212 Tue, 02 Sep 2025 01:12:22 +0000 /?p=38212 Earlier this term, Year 10 student Blake Byrne completed a Structured Workplace Learning Placement within his family’s business, Aaron Byrne Building in Wodonga. Following this successful placement, and with the support of WSSC Careers Adviser, Garry Brook; Head Start SBAT Coordinator, Shane Crispin; and Tracey Jacobs from MEGT, Blake has now officially joined the family team as a Head Start School Based Apprentice.

Blake is currently working one day a week in the business and said he is enjoying the work, especially learning directly under the experienced guidance of his father, Aaron. He will soon commence his Certificate III in Carpentry at Wodonga TAFE to further develop his skills.

Aaron, both father and supervisor, shared that it is invaluable for young people to gain real industry experience early and that opportunities like Head Start provide a pathway he wished had been available when he was at school. He also acknowledged Blake’s commitment, saying his son has truly earned the chance to start his apprenticeship.

Tracey Jacobs from MEGT Apprenticeships added, “It is fantastic to work with 鶹ѡ and the Head Start program, as it provides a strong pathway for the next generation of tradespeople.”

Head Start Coordinator, Shane Crispin, highlighted the importance of recognising that family-run businesses are playing a vital role in the success of SBATs. “It is a common misconception that young people cannot complete an SBAT in a relative’s business. In fact, across our region we currently have 12 students undertaking their apprenticeship or traineeship with family. These partnerships are an excellent example of how families can actively support young people to explore and establish their careers.”

Congratulations to Blake for showing initiative and using his family connections in such a positive way to begin his career journey. A special thank you to Aaron, Sarah, and the team at Aaron Byrne Building, along with MEGT, for supporting these exciting opportunities for our young people.

For information on School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs), please contact Head Start Coordinator, Shane Crispin.
